Today is Saturday. Today was the first day that the temperature was actually cool. We had temps in the 90’s just a couple of days ago.
Today, I went apple picking. There is a farm and orchard about 4 miles from my house. The trees are low and bursting with apples the size of baseballs and bigger.
As I took my first bite into one and the sweet juice from the crisp fruit filled my mouth, I felt myself tear up. I get to enjoy this simple pleasure. Prisoners across the country who went on strike to protest slave labor and inhumane conditions are being retaliated against. GEO corp that owns many of the private prisons has denied hot meals, visits, phone calls and orchestrated lockdowns.
This is the legacy of corporate greed as it turns people into commodity. This is the dark underbelly of US capitalism.
“The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them.” George Orwell
War, prison industrial complex, slavery, exploiting the poor, prosecuting whistleblowers, persecuting journalists, mass surveillance, stealing children….
Are our eyes open to the plight of others? Do we really care about our fellow human being?
